Insider guide
Shopping Union Street.
The story
Union Street is Cow Hollow's Victorian-era main street. The shopping runs along the 1600 to 2300 blocks, from Gough St to Steiner St, with a few more stops on Fillmore St just north of Union.
It is lined with independent boutiques, activewear shops, specialty food stores and patio restaurants, and it suits a slow weekend browse that mixes shopping with brunch.
What to Expect
Independent fashion is spread along the street. Danielle (2278) stocks hard-to-find French and Italian labels near the west end, Bobby London (2187) carries labels exclusive to the store and hosts shop-and-sip evenings, and Dantone Milano (1784) and Shaw Shoes (2001) cover European and everyday footwear. West Coast Leather sells leather apparel. The brand stores sit in the 1900 to 2100 blocks: Lululemon, Vuori, Sephora and Jo Malone London.
Food shops are a big part of the street. The Caviar Co. (1954) sells sustainably sourced caviar with serving pieces and gift sets, The Epicurean Trader (1909) has small-batch pantry goods and a deep shelf of whiskey and mezcal, Luke's Local (2190) is the upscale grocery, and PlumpJack Wine & Spirits is a block off Union on Fillmore. For gifts, TopDrawer has travel gear and pens, Nikoniko sells Asian-themed gifts, Carats and Stones is known for statement rings, and Le Bouquet has been the street's florist since the 1980s. Dog owners get two bakeries, Le Marcel at 2066 and Mishka at 2124.
Best Time to Visit
Specialty food shops open early: The Epicurean Trader runs 7am to 9pm daily and Luke's Local 8am to 8pm. Boutique hours run about 10am to 6pm, and some shops close on Sunday, including The Caviar Co. and Danielle, and Carats and Stones lists Tuesday to Saturday only. Bobby London closes on Tuesday. The street's big event is the Union Street Festival in early June, so expect crowds that weekend.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start with coffee at The Epicurean Trader, walk west past The Caviar Co. to Vuori and Sephora, then on to Bobby London and Union Street Coffee Roastery for a bag of beans. Finish at Danielle near Steiner.
Where to Eat
Wildseed at 2000 Union St serves plant-based food with a Union Street parklet. A block north of Union at 3127 Fillmore, Atelier Crenn holds three MICHELIN stars. Tiya on Scott St, on the edge of Cow Hollow, is MICHELIN Recommended for Indian cooking with a Californian twist. For a quick bite, Luke's Local has prepared meals to take to a picnic.
