Insider guide
Shopping Chestnut St.
The story
Chestnut Street is the Marina's main shopping street, a few blocks of the 2000–2200 address range running west from Fillmore St toward Divisadero, plus Pierce St just off Chestnut. It mixes brand stores, women's boutiques, beauty shops and long-running delis and bakeries.
Locals use it for errands, and visitors can pair it with the Marina Green waterfront. Lucca Delicatessen has been making sandwiches here since 1929.
What to Expect
Casual brand stores fill the 2000 and 2100 blocks: Faherty and Marine Layer side by side in the 2100 block, Madewell at 2084, Taylor Stitch for custom shirts and denim, Roark for travel clothing, and Mejuri, where you can try on everyday fine jewelry before buying. Two Skirts and Dress are the independent women's boutiques, and Bluemercury carries high-end skincare at the east end.
For the house, Thuma has a furniture showroom with a café inside, Ei Home sells candles and hostess gifts, and Sloat Garden Center on Pierce St has houseplants and seeds. The food shops are the real reason to come: Lucca Delicatessen for build-your-own sandwiches and cheeses, La Fromagerie for cheese and sandwiches near the west end, SusieCakes for layer cakes by the slice, Lil Sweet Treat for candy, and California Wine Merchant, a Chestnut Street wine shop and bar for more than 50 years.
Best Time to Visit
Most shops don't post hours; where they do, it's about 10 or 11am to 6 or 7pm, with Sundays a little shorter. The food shops are daytime stops, so call ahead for an evening visit. The exceptions run late: California Wine Merchant is open until midnight Monday to Wednesday and 1am Thursday to Saturday, and SusieCakes until 8pm daily. Thuma opens at 9am on weekends.
If You Only Have an Hour
Get a coffee at the café inside Thuma, then walk east past Faherty and Marine Layer to Madewell and Mejuri. Pick up a sandwich at Lucca Delicatessen on the way back and walk it down to Marina Green.
Where to Eat
A16 at 2355 Chestnut St holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for pizza, and Tiya on Scott St just off Chestnut is MICHELIN Recommended for Indian cooking with a Californian twist. For a picnic, combine Lucca Delicatessen, La Fromagerie and a bottle from California Wine Merchant. Off Chestnut, Dynamo Donut has a kiosk at 110 Yacht Rd by the Yacht Harbor, and The Interval at Long Now in Fort Mason does coffee and drinks.
