Union Square, Block by Block
Union Square is downtown San Francisco's retail core: the square itself, bounded by Post, Geary, Stockton and Powell, plus Post and Geary out to Kearny, Grant Avenue and Stockton Street from Market up to Sutter, and Maiden Lane. The department stores face the square, the luxury houses line Grant, Post and Geary, and Market Street holds the newest big stores. The district is rebuilding after several pandemic-era closures, so expect a few empty storefronts between the names below. Most of these stores open at 10am and close between 5pm and 8pm, with shorter Sunday hours. Our Union Square district page lists every shop we cover.
Start on Market Street
Come up from Powell Street station, or step off the cable car at Powell and Market, and you are at the south edge of the district. Uniqlo (801 Market St) opened on October 9, 2026, with a UTme! print studio for Muni and local-artist designs and a RE.UNIQLO studio for embroidery and repairs. A few doors along, Levi's Market Street (815 Market St) has a Levi's Tailor Shop, the Made & Crafted, Levi's Vintage Clothing and Authorized Vintage lines, and Levi's Secondhand trade-ins, so bring the jeans you no longer wear.
Grant Avenue: The Luxury Houses
Walk east to Grant Avenue and turn north. The designer run starts between Market and Post. Valentino (105 Grant Ave) carries handbags, pumps, menswear and women's ready-to-wear. Hermès (125 Grant Ave) sells leather goods, silk scarves and ties, ready-to-wear and home pieces, and is closed Sundays. Farther up, Cartier (199 Grant Ave) has a jewelry and watch salon, a High Jewelry room and an in-house care service for repairs, and it will emboss leather goods. Book ahead to skip the wait. Across the street, Bvlgari (206 Grant Ave) is the newer boutique, with Serpenti, B.zero1 and Divas' Dream jewelry, Octo Finissimo watches, fragrance and Serpenti bags.
Maiden Lane
Maiden Lane is the pedestrian lane off the square. McMullen (135 Maiden Lane) is Sherri McMullen's luxury fashion boutique, one of the few owner-run designer shops in a district of brand flagships. Hours aren't posted, so call before you make a special trip.
Post Street: Jewelers, Watches and Gump's
Post Street has most of the district's jewelers. Shreve & Co. (150 Post St), the local jeweler's flagship, sells fine jewelry, engagement rings and watches from leading houses. It closes at 5pm, earlier than its neighbors. Dior (185 Post St) has women's ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, jewelry and timepieces, and takes appointments. Kerns Fine Jewelry (Rolex) (255 Post St) is the official Rolex jeweler here and handles Rolex servicing. Visits are by appointment, Tuesday to Saturday, with the last one at 4pm. Tiffany & Co. (350 Post St) sells fine jewelry, engagement rings and watches, and is open Sunday afternoons.
Gump's (250 Post St) is the long-running San Francisco home store: Herend, Lalique and Baccarat, tabletop and barware, jade and pearl jewelry, estate silver and Asian antiques. It keeps short hours, Monday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm. Across the street, The RealReal (253 Post St) has reopened its luxury consignment flagship at its original Post Street spot after leaving in 2023. It sells designer bags, jewelry, watches and clothing and takes consignments in store. Nike San Francisco (278 Post St) has footwear, apparel and in-store Nike Experts. Apple Union Square (300 Post St) faces the square, and its open plaza is the easiest meeting point in the district.
Geary Street
One block south, Chanel (156 Geary St) carries ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, fine jewelry and watches, plus fragrance, makeup and the Les Exclusifs de Chanel scents. Watch collectors should go up to A. Lange & Söhne Salon (140 Geary St, 3rd Floor), the German watchmaker's third-floor salon. Book ahead, since walk-ins are seen only when staff are free. Louis Vuitton (233 Geary St) sells monogram leather goods, handbags, wallets and luggage from a leased storefront in a Macy's-owned building. LVMH bought 220 Post St nearby in October 2026. Toward Market, Acne Studios (18-24 Geary St) has men's and women's ready-to-wear, denim, footwear and accessories.
The Square and Stockton Street
Neiman Marcus (150 Stockton St) fills the former City of Paris building with designer clothing, shoes, handbags and jewelry. Macy's (170 O'Farrell St) spreads clothing, housewares and gifts over several floors, and stayed open after the company failed to find a buyer for the building. Up Stockton, Moncler (212 Stockton St) sells down jackets, knitwear and outerwear, and its advisors can reserve pieces and book private appointments. Next door, Bape Store (216 Stockton St), a recent arrival, carries A Bathing Ape's camo hoodies, tees and sneakers.
Finish at Nintendo San Francisco (331 Powell St), on the corner of Powell and Geary, with Animal Crossing, Zelda, Pikmin and Pokémon sections, a wall of amiibo, demo stations and a kiosk for customizing a Switch. If you need a coffee at the north end, Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha (211 Sutter St) is a coffee and matcha bar listed by the Union Square Alliance.
Lunch and Dinner Nearby
The easiest lunches are inside the department stores. Neiman Marcus has the Rotunda restaurant under its historic stained-glass dome, and The Fresh Market in the same store does lighter salads and sandwiches. At Macy's, the Cheesecake Factory on the 8th floor looks out over Union Square.
For dinner, three restaurants in the MICHELIN Guide California 2026 are within walking distance. Kin Khao (55 Cyril Magnin St), a few blocks south of the square, holds one star for Thai cooking. Mister Jiu's (28 Waverly Pl), up in Chinatown, holds one star for Chinese cooking. Benu (22 Hawthorne St), south of Market, holds three stars. Our MICHELIN guide has the full San Francisco list.
Transit, Parking and Where to Stay
Take transit if you can. Powell Street BART/Muni station and the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable cars stop at Powell and Market, at the start of this walk. Expect construction on Powell Street from late 2026: a three-block redesign centered on the cable cars runs through late 2027. If you drive, the Union Square Alliance lists the 433 Mason Garage (433 Mason St) and the 450 Sutter Garage (450 Sutter St). No rates were posted.
To stay close, Beacon Grand, A Union Square Hotel (450 Powell St) is a block from the square, and citizenM San Francisco Union Square (72 Ellis St) is a few blocks south. Our hotels guide covers more. One more name is on the way: Nordstrom Rack is due at 2 Stockton St in fall 2027.
