Insider guide
Shopping Hayes Valley.
The story
Hayes Valley is a few compact blocks west of the Civic Center. The shopping runs along Hayes St from Gough to Laguna, with more on Octavia, Linden and Laguna and the nearby blocks of Grove and Fell. Independent boutiques sit beside digital-native brand stores, eyewear shops and wine and sake shops.
It suits shoppers who want clothing, gear and gifts within an easy walk, with plenty of cafes in between. Most of what you'll want is in the 300 to 500 blocks of Hayes.
What to Expect
Menswear is strong. Todd Snyder has an in-house tailor for dress pants and shirts and a Moscot eyewear shop inside, Buck Mason (568) carries a selection of vintage watches next to its tees and denim, and Aether sells technical outerwear for travel. For designer clothing, M.A.C. (Modern Appealing Clothing) on Grove St stocks Dries Van Noten and Junya Watanabe, Cotton Sheep specializes in hard-to-find Japanese brands, and A.P.C. has its Surplus line. Reliquary mixes contemporary and vintage pieces, and Industry of All Nations makes small-batch clothes with natural dyes.
Eyewear clusters within a block: Warby Parker, Garrett Leight and Todd Snyder's Moscot shop. Away sells luggage with same-day foil personalization and repairs Away bags, Peak Design lets you try its camera bags and straps, and Parachute has bedding you can feel before ordering. Metier pairs contemporary and vintage jewelry, Malin + Goetz does skincare, and Orange Bird sells California-themed gifts. Bottle shops finish the strip: True Sake for Japanese sake, with staff who match styles to food, and Arlequin Wine Merchant near Gough.
Best Time to Visit
Brand stores on Hayes generally open around 11am and close at 6 or 7pm Monday to Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. Some independents close on Monday: Reliquary, Cotton Sheep and Metier open Tuesday to Sunday, and Arlequin opens Wednesday to Sunday but stays open until 9pm. Through 2026, Hayes St between Gough and Octavia is closed to cars on Fridays 4–10pm and Saturdays 7am–10pm for the Hayes Valley Farmers Market & Shared Spaces program, which makes Saturday the easiest day to walk the strip.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at the Gough end with Away and Garrett Leight, then walk west to Malin + Goetz, Buck Mason and Todd Snyder. Detour onto Octavia and Linden for Lisa Says Gah and Clare V., and finish with a bottle from True Sake.
Where to Eat
Dumpling Home at 298 Gough St is a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand and the easy lunch. For a big dinner, Kiln at 149 Fell St holds two MICHELIN stars. Pick up a bottle at Arlequin Wine Merchant on the way.
