Insider guide

Shopping Valencia St.

The story

Valencia Street is the Mission District's main independent shopping street, running from 16th St to 24th St, with Taylor Stitch and Unseen Clothing just north of 16th. Denim and menswear, art books, knives, thrift and oddities shops sit among cafes and restaurants.

It suits browsers who want local independents over chains, with Dolores Park two blocks away and the 16th St Mission BART station at the north end.

What to Expect

Menswear is a strength. Self Edge (569) is a raw and selvedge denim flagship at 16th St that hems jeans free on any purchase, Evan Kinori (1367) sells the designer's earth-toned menswear, and Taylor Stitch (383) is the label's original store, opened in 2010. Mission Workshop makes bags and technical apparel at its headquarters on Rondel Place, an alley off 16th. Aggregate Supply (806), Unseen Clothing (301) and Gravel & Gold, a women-owned design collective on 21st St since 2008, mix clothing with home and apothecary goods.

The oddities are what people remember. Paxton Gate (824), a San Francisco Legacy Business, sells taxidermy, insect specimens and carnivorous plants, and at 826 the 826 Valencia Pirate Supply Store sells eye patches and spyglasses to fund free tutoring. Open Editions (786) is an art bookshop and design store, Needles & Pens sells zines and artist books, and Ministry of Scent (962) carries fragrances from more than 100 indie brands with one-on-one consultations. Bernal Cutlery (766) sharpens knives in house, Dandelion Chocolate (740) makes bean-to-bar chocolate at 18th St, and Community Thrift Store (623) is a large nonprofit thrift at Clarion Alley.

Best Time to Visit

Most shops open at 11am or noon and close between 5:30 and 7pm. Check the days: Paxton Gate is closed Tuesday, Unseen Clothing opens Wednesday to Sunday, and Mission Workshop opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes 1–2pm for lunch. Gravel & Gold closes at 5pm on Sunday, so go there first on a Sunday walk. At Dandelion Chocolate, production runs daily until about 6pm with a lunch break, so come before then to watch bars being made.

If You Only Have an Hour

Come out of 16th St Mission BART and start at Self Edge. Walk south to Community Thrift Store and Dandelion Chocolate, drop a knife at Bernal Cutlery, then browse Open Editions, Paxton Gate and the Pirate Supply Store before picking up the knife on the way back.

Where to Eat

Dandelion Chocolate has hot chocolate and in-house pastries. Just off Valencia, Good Good Culture Club at 3560 18th St is a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for Southeast Asian food, and Sons & Daughters at 2875 18th St holds two stars; its Julianna Yang won the guide's 2026 Outstanding Service Award. Lazy Bear at 3416 19th St also holds two stars. Further out in the Mission, Donaji on 24th St and Flour + Water on Harrison St are both MICHELIN Recommended.
