Walk One: Hayes Street from Gough to Laguna
Hayes Valley and Upper Fillmore are two of the city's strongest neighborhoods for independent boutiques, and each makes a short walk. Do one in the morning and the other after lunch. Nearly every shop here posts its hours, so you can plan around them, and we say which stops are brand stores.
Hayes Valley is a few compact blocks west of the Civic Center, along Hayes Street from Gough to Laguna and the side streets off it. Brand stores generally open around 11am and close at 6 or 7pm Monday to Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. Several of the independents below are closed Monday, so go Tuesday through Sunday. Hayes between Gough and Octavia is closed to cars Fridays 4 to 10pm and Saturdays 7am to 10pm through 2026, which makes Saturday the easiest day to walk it. Our Hayes Valley page lists every shop we cover.
The Independents
Start a block off Hayes at M.A.C. (Modern Appealing Clothing) (387 Grove St), an independent designer store stocking avant-garde labels such as Dries Van Noten and Junya Watanabe for men and women. Back on Hayes, Reliquary (544 Hayes St) is a local boutique mixing contemporary clothing with vintage pieces. It opens at noon, Tuesday to Sunday. Cotton Sheep (572 Hayes St) focuses on handcrafted and hard-to-find Japanese clothing brands that are rarely stocked elsewhere in the city. Across the street, Metier (575 Hayes St) pairs jewelry from contemporary designers with vintage pieces, and also opens at noon.
For a bottle to take to dinner, True Sake (556 Hayes St) is a retail shop devoted to Japanese sake. It has a large range, and the staff will match a style to your food and budget.
Brand Stores Worth a Stop
Hayes also has brand stores, several with services you won't get online. Garrett Leight (393 Hayes St) sells handcrafted optical frames and sunglasses, one of several eyewear shops within a block of each other. Parachute (445 Hayes St) lets you feel the sheets, duvet covers, towels and loungewear before you order. Malin + Goetz (508 Hayes St) has skincare, haircare and grooming, and the staff will recommend before you buy. Buck Mason (568 Hayes St) sells tees, denim and jackets for men and women and keeps a selection of vintage watches. Farther west, Todd Snyder (590 Hayes St) has an in-house tailor for dress pants and shirts and a Moscot eyewear shop inside. If you are traveling, Away (371 Hayes St) does same-day foil personalization when you buy luggage, and repairs Away bags.
Eat and Park
Dumpling Home (298 Gough St) holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for Chinese cooking. For a big dinner, Kiln (149 Fell St) holds two MICHELIN stars. The city-run Performing Arts Garage at 360 Grove St, a block from Hayes, has 598 spaces at $3 to $5 an hour with a $26 12-hour maximum. Muni's 6 Hayes/Parnassus runs on Hayes St, but outbound buses detour to Grove St while Hayes is closed to cars on Fridays and Saturdays.
Walk Two: Fillmore Street from Bush to Jackson
Upper Fillmore in Pacific Heights is a six-block run of Fillmore Street from Bush north to Jackson. Designer and contemporary clothing stores, jewelers, perfumers and home shops share it, with independents mixed among national brands. Stores open around 11am and close at 6 or 7pm, and some keep shorter Sunday hours. Walk it south to north, since the independents bunch up at both ends. Our Fillmore Street page has the full list.
Bush to California
Near Bush, Sue Fisher King (1913 Fillmore St) sells linens, tableware, decorative objects and gifts. Across the street, Hi-Ho Silver (1904 Fillmore St) is one of the street's independent jewelers, open only Friday to Sunday from noon to 5pm. Fiat Lux (1942 Fillmore St) is a local fine jewelry shop, and this is one of its two stores in the city. It sells rings, earrings, wedding bands, bespoke designs and permanent jewelry. Between Pine and California, HYOU Fine Jewelry (2029 Fillmore St) opened quietly in early 2026. The brand stores on this stretch are Sézane (2028 Fillmore St), the Paris label, and rag & bone (2060 Fillmore St), the brand's only San Francisco store, with in-store tailoring and a drop-off for recycling old denim.
California to Clay
Between California and Sacramento, Catbird (2124 Fillmore St) sells delicate gold rings, stacking pieces, earrings and engagement rings, and Diptyque (2122 Fillmore St) next door has scented candles, eaux de toilette and home fragrance. Browser Books (2195 Fillmore St) is one of the few independent bookstores in Pacific Heights, and it is open daily until 9pm, long after the boutiques close. Between Clay and Sacramento, Rachel Comey (2223 Fillmore St) sells the New York designer's women's clothing and shoes. For something sweet, Miette (2252 Fillmore St) moved its patisserie flagship here from Hayes Valley; its original shop is still in the Ferry Building, covered in our Ferry Building food gifts guide.
Clay to Jackson
Reformation (2360 Fillmore St), between Clay and Washington, is the last national brand on the walk. Past it, the Washington Street end is a run of local and independent shops. Margaret O'Leary (2400 Fillmore St) is the San Francisco knitwear designer's own shop for sweaters, cardigans and knit separates. Ministry of Scent (2408 Fillmore St) is an independent perfume shop carrying niche fragrance houses. Trabert Goldsmiths (2420 Fillmore St) is the place to ask about custom and handmade gold pieces; it opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30am to 5:30pm, by appointment. Heidi Says (2426 Fillmore St) is an independent women's clothing boutique and a good last stop.
Eat and Park
The serious restaurants sit just south of Bush. 7 Adams (1963 Sutter St), just off Fillmore, holds one MICHELIN star. So do State Bird Provisions (1529 Fillmore St) and The Progress (1525 Fillmore St), side by side. Bansang (1560 Fillmore St) holds a Bib Gourmand for Korean cooking, and Copra (1700 Fillmore St), recommended by MICHELIN, is chef Srijith Gopinathan's restaurant for the coastal cooking of Kerala. To drive, use the city-run Japan Center Annex Garage at 1650 Fillmore St, a few blocks south of Bush: 175 spaces, $3 to $5 an hour and a $24 12-hour maximum.
