Insider guide
Shopping Union Square.
The story
Union Square is San Francisco's downtown retail core: the square itself, bounded by Post, Geary, Stockton and Powell, plus Post and Geary from Kearny to Powell, Grant Ave and Stockton St from Market to Sutter, Maiden Lane and Market St at Powell. Department stores, the luxury houses on Grant, Post and Geary, and Maiden Lane's boutiques all sit within a few blocks.
It is the place for big-name flagships and designer labels, and it is rebuilding after several pandemic-era closures. New stores keep arriving: Uniqlo opened on Market St on October 9, 2026, The RealReal is back at its original Post St spot, and LVMH bought 220 Post St in October 2026.
What to Expect
Grant Avenue is the luxury block. Hermès, Valentino (105), Cartier (199), with a High Jewelry room and in-house repairs, and Bvlgari (206) are a short walk apart. Chanel and Louis Vuitton are on Geary, Dior and Tiffany & Co. on Post, and Moncler on Stockton. For watches, book the A. Lange & Söhne Salon on the third floor of 140 Geary, and Kerns Fine Jewelry at 255 Post is the official Rolex jeweler, by appointment only. Shreve & Co. at 150 Post is the local jeweler's flagship.
Neiman Marcus fills the former City of Paris building at 150 Stockton, and Macy's covers several floors at 170 O'Farrell. For something less expected, Gump's sells Herend, Lalique, Baccarat, estate silver and Asian antiques, and McMullen on Maiden Lane is one of the few owner-run designer boutiques in the district. Levi's on Market St has a Tailor Shop and takes Levi's Secondhand trade-ins, Uniqlo a few doors down has a UTme! print studio with Muni designs, and Nintendo San Francisco at Powell and Geary has demo stations and a kiosk to customize a Switch.
Best Time to Visit
Most luxury boutiques open at 10am and close at 6pm, with shorter Sunday hours from about noon. Hermès is closed on Sunday, Gump's keeps Monday to Saturday 11am to 5pm, Shreve & Co. closes at 5pm, and Kerns takes its last appointment at 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The big stores run later: Apple, Macy's, Nike and Levi's stay open until 8pm Monday to Saturday, and Neiman Marcus until 8pm on Thursday. From late 2026, expect construction on Powell Street, where a three-block redesign centered on the cable cars runs through late 2027.
If You Only Have an Hour
Get off at Powell Street station and walk up Grant Ave past Hermès, Cartier and Bvlgari. Cut through Maiden Lane to McMullen, cross the square to Neiman Marcus, and have lunch under the dome at the Rotunda.
Where to Eat
The department stores do lunch well. Neiman Marcus's Rotunda restaurant sits under the historic stained-glass dome, and the store also has The Fresh Market for lighter salads and sandwiches. Macy's 8th-floor Cheesecake Factory looks out over Union Square. For coffee, Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha is on Sutter St.
For dinner, Kin Khao at 55 Cyril Magnin St holds one MICHELIN star for Thai cooking.
