Insider guide

Shopping Jackson Square.

The story

Jackson Square is a small historic district on the edge of the Financial District. The shops sit on Jackson St between Montgomery and Sansome, on Gold St and Hotaling Place, and on Montgomery St from Washington St to Pacific Ave, with a few more on the Washington and Pacific edges.

It suits gallery-goers and shoppers after international labels in a quieter setting than Union Square. The block of Jackson St between Montgomery and Sansome is the fashion block, and Montgomery St between Washington and Pacific is the gallery row.

A Little History

These are San Francisco's oldest commercial blocks: brick and cast-iron buildings from the 1850s that survived 1906. Hotaling Place, the short alley off Washington St, is lined with some of the district's oldest buildings, and the Transamerica Pyramid, completed in 1972, stands at 600 Montgomery St.

What to Expect

On Jackson St, Paul Smith (463) has men's and women's tailoring in one of the historic brick storefronts, and Thom Browne (432) sells suiting and knitwear. Isabel Marant and Aesop share 455 Jackson, Zimmermann fills a double storefront at 458-460 across from Paul Smith, Anine Bing (412) does leather jackets and denim, and Goldwin (444) sells technical outerwear from the Japanese maker. Shinola is around the corner on Hotaling Place, and Filson is at 722 Montgomery.

The galleries are the reason to linger. Gallery Wendi Norris shows modern and contemporary artists, several tied to Surrealism. Foster Gwin Gallery specializes in Bay Area Abstract Expressionist and Figurative painting from 1945 to 1975, the place to see postwar California art. Canessa Gallery (708), Japonesque Gallery (824), the nonprofit 836M (836) and Simon Breitbard Fine Arts (843) complete the Montgomery row, with Scott Richards Contemporary Art on Pacific and Rebecca Camacho Presents on Washington.

Best Time to Visit

Go on a weekday. Gallery Wendi Norris is open Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm and closed on weekends, and most other galleries don't post hours, so check the current exhibition before you go. The fashion boutiques open around 10 or 11am and close at 6pm; Thom Browne is closed on Sunday and Isabel Marant lists Monday to Saturday only, while Paul Smith, Zimmermann and Anine Bing open Sunday afternoons.

If You Only Have an Hour

Walk the Jackson St block from Anine Bing to Paul Smith and Zimmermann, stopping at Gallery Wendi Norris on a weekday. Turn onto Montgomery for Foster Gwin Gallery and Filson, then finish with lunch at Loveski Deli on Jackson.

Where to Eat

Loveski Deli at 499 Jackson St is the lunch stop, and Bix on Gold St, the alley off Montgomery, is the place for a drink. Trestle at 531 Jackson St is a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. Up on Pacific Ave, Quince holds three MICHELIN stars for its contemporary Californian tasting menu, and its rustic Italian sibling Cotogna, at 490 Pacific, turns out pizzas, roasted meats and pastas from a display kitchen.
